The Muderous Mile Challenge

Have you ever wanted to do a triathlon, but you’re not that strong of a swimmer and the thought of spending $5,000 on a bike makes you want to throw up?

Well, perk up! I’ve got just the thing for you!

It’s called the Murderous Mile.

Now, don’t let the violent name scare you. That’s just for fun. No one will try to kill you, except for the rower, or maybe the bike. Then again, the ski erg might try to kill you. But no people will.

You’re totally safe from murderous people.

The goal is to murder the mile, not get murdered by it. And plenty of folks have kicked it right in the teeth.

We first did what’s become the Murderous Mile in March of 2017. At the time, we did a monthly alpha challenge. This was one of the most hotly contested and competitive challenges in the history of Beyond Strength.

Chris and our then coach, Jon, were in spicy competition, but our coach Geoff was the real star of the show. He finished in 3:50, which is obnoxious. Jon eeked out second place at the 11th hour with a time of just over four minutes. As I recall (and I’m sure, accurately), Chris was devastatingly butt hurt. He still carries the anger and the shame.

The question is, how in the hell did Geoff cover a mile in 3:50?

Let’s talk about how the Murderous Mile works.

Murderous Mile Breakdown

Here’s how it works: The first leg of the Murderous Mile triathlon is 500 meters on the rower. As soon as you finish those 500 meters, you hop off of the rower and onto the echo bike for half of a mile. Then you finish with 250 grinding meters on the ski erg. Yes, we switch back and forth from metric to American standard with the measurements. But the math works out and we won’t apologize.

And that, dear friends, is the Murderous Mile.

All you have to do is sort out your strategy to get the best time.

You have until November 18 to sort that out. That’s the day, good people, that we murder the mile.

What Do You Get for Signing Up?

Yes, signing up punches your ticket to test your mettle and murder the Murderous Mile (Can you beat Geoff, or at the very least, Chris?). But that’s not all that you get or that’s going down on November 18, 2023.

You’ll get a sweet t-shirt designed by the uber-talented, if yet still bitter about the original Murderous Mile, Chris Merritt.

We’ll also hand you a cold beer when you finish and we’ll have a Venezuelan arepa food truck on site so you can enjoy some flavor after burning your legs and lungs for a mile of rowing, biking, and ski erg-ing (skurging). Our main man, Rony Torres, did the leg work to bring the truck to Beyond Strength so he can share some of his culture with you. That’s pretty cool.

So, come challenge yourself and have fun with us on November 18, 2023. You get to do cool, hard shit with cool people and have a good time in the process.

And, for the love of God, come beat Chris. (He gloats, ya know.)
